Now, it is possible to predict the structure of proteins and protein complexes directly from amino acid sequence information. However, how to use these new tools in the best way is not clear. What we really want to predict is not protein structure, but function. To be perfectly honest, we rather want to design new functions.

Almost everything that happens in a cell is a result of a protein interaction. Proteins interact with each other to form complexes, with a myriad of molecules for signalling and regulation and with substrates to catalyse enzymatic reactions. Protein function is therefore directly linked to protein interactions. We are developing tools - and applying them - to design and study protein interactions for diverse applications.
